About us

(I) ANIMAL BIRTH CONTROL PROGRAMME (STERILIZATION)
We run the Animal Birth Control programme of sterilizing and vaccinating stray dogs at kennels leased to us by the BMC. We sterilize 200-250 stray dogs per month. An ear notch is put on the ear as a method of identifying that the dog is sterilized.
 (2) ON-SITE FIRST-AID AND VACCINATION
Trained on-site field personnel and volunteers attend to first-aid cases from the calls that are received on WSD’s help-line. Stray dogs are treated for maggot wounds, cuts, bites and skin problems. WSD also carries out mass immunization programmes of re-vaccinating stray dogs against rabies. WSD treats more than 10,000 dogs and cats on an annual basis.
(3) ADOPTION
WSD finds homes for pets that are abandoned or street dogs that need a home. All potential adopters have to go through an interview process and follow-up after the dog has been adopted.(4) EDUCATION AND AWARENESS
WSD has an active education programme, which is three-pronged.
-A slide presentation to sensitise people about the stray dog issue, dog bites and rabies prevention.
-A chart presentation in slums to educate slum children about dog bites and rabies prevention
-Rabies awareness drives at public places to educate the public about rabies prevention.
