About us

Mission/Vision
To work towards freedom from preventable and curable blindness

Background
The organisation was founded as a volunteer driven public health initiative in 1977. Realizing the large burden of avoidable blindness, the trust decided to take on blindness prevention and cure in a structured form from 1985. It was also realised that majority requiring treatment were from disadvantaged and rural communities. Today our sustainable model of eye care enables 150000 vision-restoring surgeries with beneficiaries identified through outreach.

Dr R V Ramani, Founder and Managing Trustee, Sankara Eye Care Institutions, India graduated from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. Driven by a social purpose he was able to motivate likeminded people from across the social spectrum to become a part of the Sankara movement. A Rotarian, he has been recognised by various national and international awards including the Role Model of India Award. Dr Ramani is an advisor on health care to CII and also on the Vision 2020 advisory body established by Government of India.
