About us
Sevalaya was founded in 1988 by V Muralidharan, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and a software engineer in Tata Consultancy Services and a few of his friends. Inspired by the teachings of Mahakavi Bharathiar, Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda the vision of Sevalaya was to work towards uplift of poor, empowerment of women and to provide care for the downtrodden. The organization took one major tenet from each of the three inspirations – referred to as “BGV†in Sevalaya parlance:
*Village Development from Gandhiji
*Feeding the Hungry from Swami Vivekananda
*Educating the poor, from Mahakavi Bharathiar
The vision of Sevalaya is to serve the rural poor and transform them for an equitable, happy and fulfilled society with an improved quality of life.
The philosophy of Sevalaya is captured in the statement that is found at the entrance of the campus (shown in the picture)
