About us
Breakthrough works to change deep-set cultural norms that keep women and girls on the fringes of society. We reach over 520,000 adolescents through a direct school programme that helps boys and girls see each other as equals, and reduce discrimination and violence. We work across 5 states in nearly 4300 villages to engage teachers, parents and community members in dialogue on issues like early marriage, domestic violence, sexual harassment and gender-biased sex selection to help create greater sensitivity and gender equity.
Breakthrough is unique in its ability to use mass media to highlight issues and sensitise audiences - like the award-winning Bell Bajao campaign that reached over 240 million people and succeeded in bringing the issue of domestic violence into mainstream conversation. More recently, Mission Hazaar, a Breakthrough campaign against the adverse sex ratio, has been able to attain scale by being the government's communication partner for Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao.
We are also looking at ways to improve the condition of the working woman and have started a novel programme called Stree Link that works to create a more supportive ecosystem for women in factories and offices. We sensitise people at the workplace and also work on building support for women in their communities and families so that they are encouraged to work and can be confident, productive members of society.
